How to test a furnace transformer?

transformer is responsible for changing input voltage to other level within the furnace. Initially current passes through primary windings then it is transferred to secondary coil for reducing voltage to a safe level.

The voltage is passed through control circuits to perform wide variety of electric functions. The transformer also has the capability to work with different loading applications as per required operations. However, we cannot be sure about output voltage as it can be customized according to customers’ specifications.

Industrial furnace transformers are available with automatic cooling system able to withstand with different temperature conditions. For high power transmission, furnace transformer can be categorized as – one phase, two-phase or three-phase transformer. To enable proper transformer functionality, it is necessary to troubleshoot or test transformer in the best possible way.

First of all, locate the transformer. For every transformer there are some incoming wires and some outgoing connections. Incoming wires are named as lines and outgoing connections are named as load. Now attach the lines connection through voltmeter and check the current level. In case reading is less than 110 volts then power source should be repaired immediately.

In the second case, attach the output load connection through voltmeter and check the current level. The reading should come between 24 and 48 volts. In case, readings are not accurate replace the loads connection. In case of accurate readings, you are working with fully functional transformer. These were minor testing steps that can be done by non technical team also.

In case, there is requirement of replacing whole part then it is better to consult some reputed manufacturing Company in India that can complete testing, repairing and overhauling task for you. It would be great to prefer the same manufacturing company from which you have bought the transformer earlier. They are already familiar with technical specifications and manufacturing details of the transformer. You can also search about potential suppliers in India online. Don’t forget to check their background and customer feedback for testing and repairing services.
